Champion of Ukraine in athletics Roman Havryliuk was killed by Russian occupiers on May 17, 2024. This was reported by

Roman Havryliuk was born on July 18, 1982, in the village of Krasnopillia in the Volodymyretskyi district of Rivne region. From an early age, he was involved in sports, particularly athletics. After school, he entered Volyn National University named after Lesya Ukrainka, majoring in physical education and sports.
Representing Zakarpattia, Havryliuk became the champion of Ukraine in 2014 in the 100 km run and repeatedly won in amateur races.
Later, Roman moved to Lutsk, where he began building a coaching career: he worked in the Triathlon Federation of Ukraine and was the constant coach of
«Dmytruk Lutsk Half Marathon»throughout all the years it was held.
Havryliuk's pupils say that Roman literally created a running community in the city, inspiring a love for athletics from the very first training session and helping them bond with the sport. He always had good advice, knew how to cheer others up, and taught everyone to run for their own enjoyment.
«When someone mentioned Romchyk, everyone immediately understood who was being talked about. That’s how he was referred to in the sports community. Because of his sincerity and openness to people», it is stated in the message.
Roman Havryliuk joined the Defense Forces when the Russians launched a full-scale invasion. Roman held the rank of sergeant major and served under contract. He was assigned to military unit 9938 as an inspector of the border service of the 1st category - senior reconnaissance officer of the second ground reconnaissance group of the border service (type C) of air and ground reconnaissance.
Roman Havryliuk was killed on May 16, 2024, while performing a combat mission in the area of the settlement of Bilohorivka in Luhansk.
He was buried on May 22, 2024, in the military burial section of the municipal cemetery in the village of Harazdzhа, Pidhaytsi rural community in Volyn. The funeral service took place in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Lutsk.
In July 2024, on the birthday of Roman Havryliuk, a run was held in Lutsk in his honor. 143 athletes participated. The event had a charitable purpose. During it, 86,633 UAH and $50 were raised to buy a vehicle for the 226th separate battalion of the 127th separate territorial defense brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Roman is survived by his parents, wife, and two daughters.

Roman Havryliuk was a true hero who gave his life for the peace and independence of his country. His great passion for sports and desire to help others made him an example for many people. The loss of Roman is a great sorrow for the Ukrainian sports and public community. He will always be remembered as an outstanding athlete and patriot.
