The Ukrainian skeletonist expressed his opinion on gymnast Kovtun's change of citizenship and his coach
The leader of the Ukrainian skeleton, Vladislav Geraskevich, in an interview with 'Hlavkom', shared his views on gymnast Ilya Kovtun and his coach Irina Gorbatcheva's change of citizenship.
According to Geraskevich, Kovtun and his coach received significant financial support from the state budget, and he believes this disgraces their homeland, especially in times of war.
Geraskevich supports this view and believes that many people are increasing his audience.
It was previously known that Kovtun and Gorbatcheva received 8.5 million UAH from the state budget; however, this amount only includes prize money for victories in international competitions.
Additional financial payments from other sources were not considered. Furthermore, Geraskevich noted that Kovtun previously represented the sports team of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Recently, it became known that Kovtun submitted documents for obtaining Croatian citizenship, and his coach is also considering this possibility. The Croatian Gymnastics Federation responded positively to these statements.
Ilya Kovtun is a well-known gymnast who won a silver medal at the Paris Olympics. He also achieved two fourth places and represented Ukraine at the Tokyo Olympics.
