Libanova gave a forecast on the birth rate in Ukraine after the war.


According to the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the NAS Ella Libanova, there is a decline in the birth rate in Ukraine. Starting from 2021, when the country already began to feel the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure was 1.2 (children per woman), but due to the full-scale crisis, it fell below one.
"According to European standards, this value is 1.5. I believe that after the war, the rate in Ukraine may rise again to 1.5. However, it will not exceed this limit", the sociologist forecasts in an interview with Spiegel.
However, Libanova considers migration to be the main reason for the demographic crisis in Ukraine. She cites data from the European Statistical Bureau, according to which 4.2 million Ukrainians with protected status live in the EU.
Another reason is the aging process of Ukraine's population, which began back in the 1960s. At that Time, the birth rate was also low, and at the same time, labor migration was occurring, with young Ukrainians leaving for other Soviet republics.
"People were brought to Ukraine from other Soviet republics because of its important industrial significance," Libanova says. - "But these people were older. The balance was at zero level, but the age impact was significant."
