EU countries express outrage at the return to purchasing Russian energy carriers
European Union countries that border Russia condemned the possibility of returning to the purchase of Russian fossil fuels. They argue that this is a mistake. The countries of the EU most tied to Ukraine are actively opposing any renewal of relations with the Kremlin. They are trying to prevent the return to purchasing Russian energy resources.
'Russian energy is poison. It is linked to political manipulation and blackmail. Revenues from the sale of Russian energy directly finance Russia's brutality in Ukraine as well as various diversionary and disinformation campaigns in our countries,' said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kasčius Budrys.
The European Commission also supports the position of the EU countries regarding energy independence. The restoration of normal trade relations with Moscow is currently not being considered. According to the EU Commissioner for Energy, the EU aims to be independent from energy import partners, including Russia.
EU countries that border Russia emphasize the need to maintain independence after the restoration of a peaceful situation. They believe that self-sufficiency in the energy sector is very important for Europe's future. Finnish Climate Minister Sari Multala stated that now is not the Time to ease sanctions or provide assistance to Russia. She sees that this will not strengthen Ukraine's position in peace negotiations.
Estonian Climate Minister Yoko Alender also supported the position of rejecting the purchase of energy carriers from Russia. She stated that there are currently no signs that Russia has changed its objectives. Therefore, Europe needs to abandon Russian fossil fuels. Alender also urged Europe to uniformly cease this practice.
