Russia may test NATO's commitment to the principle of 'collective defense' — German intelligence.


Russian Ministry of Defense officials expressed doubt about NATO countries adhering to the principle of 'collective defense' enshrined in the NATO Treaty in the event of an attack on an ally, reported the head of Germany's foreign intelligence.
Under conditions where large-scale attacks on NATO countries are not expected, Moscow may carry out a limited operation to protect Russian minorities, said the head of Germany's intelligence service, Bruno Kahl. The idea is to test NATO's resolve to invoke Article 5 of the treaty, which obligates Alliance members to provide assistance in the event of an attack on another NATO country, reports ZN.UA citing Politico.
'From Russia's perspective, [success] would be achieved if Article 5 did not apply in the event of an attack,' Kahl believes.
Kahl also warned of Russia's interference in the early elections in Germany scheduled for February 23.
