Working as a taxi driver – what advantages did professional experience in the Soviet Union have.

In the Soviet Socialist State, the profession of a driver was unpopular, but taxi drivers were an exception. They had more freedom and independence, resembling private entrepreneurship more than other Soviet officials.
What advantages did taxi drivers have
Taxi drivers chose their passengers, routes, and driving conditions themselves. Many cars had radio stations for orders through the dispatcher. The state had little influence on their work, the main goal was to generate profit by the end of their shift. Such conditions created a sense of independence.
Most taxi drivers drove prestigious 'Volgas' and could purchase cars at a reduced price after two years of use.
How taxi drivers in the Soviet Union earned more
Taxi drivers found various ways to increase their income, even if these were not entirely legal. They sold alcohol at night, raised prices, and served 'generous' passengers.
What disadvantages did the job of a taxi driver in the Soviet Union have
Despite all the advantages, working as a taxi driver required flexibility and informal relationships for successful functioning. This profession was difficult, yet successful.
In the Soviet Union, taxi drivers, like other workers, received no recognition. Now, most Ukrainians are willing to work for a small reward, even in part-Time jobs.
During the Soviet times, it turned out to be not as bad to drive a taxi as in many other professions. Taxi drivers had the freedom of choice, the opportunity to earn extra money, but at the same time faced the challenge of flexibility and the need for 'correct' relationships for successful work. This reality brought certain difficulties but also offered opportunities for self-realization and an increase in social status.
